The NASA Space Apps Challenge is a global two-day hackathon where participants from around the world work together to solve real-world challenges using open-source data from NASA and its Space Agency Partners.
The 2026 NASA Space Apps Challenge will take place on November 14–15, 2026.
Everyone is welcome. NASA Space Apps invites people of all ages, skill levels, and professional backgrounds who have an interest in space and science. Students, developers, scientists, designers, artists, entrepreneurs, educators, storytellers, and other problem-solvers can all participate.
No. Coding is not required. Space Apps is designed for multidisciplinary collaboration, so skills in science, research, design, data analysis, communication, storytelling, business, hardware, and other areas can all contribute to a successful project.
A Space Apps team can have between 1 and 6 participants. Teams may work as a solo participant or collaborate with other registered participants. NASA recommends building teams with a variety of skills and ideas.
No. Participants register individually for NASA Space Apps. After registering for a Local Event, participants can create a team or request to join an existing team.
Yes. The official 2026 judging guidance allows teams with a minimum of one participant and a maximum of six participants.
Yes. All members of a team must be registered for the same Local Event. Teams that do not meet this requirement are not eligible for Global Judging.
Projects can take many forms, including websites, mobile applications, data visualizations, hardware prototypes, scientific tools, educational experiences, and other creative solutions. The key is to respond to an official NASA Space Apps challenge using relevant data and resources.
Yes, if your team wants to be eligible for NASA's Global Judging and Global Awards, your project must respond to one of the official challenge statements provided for the event.
NASA Space Apps challenges make use of open-source data from NASA and its Space Agency Partners. Specific datasets, resources, and challenge materials are provided through the official Space Apps platform.
Teams submit their project through their team page on the official NASA Space Apps platform. The submission includes the required project information and a short demonstration of the solution.
For Global Judging eligibility, teams must provide a short demonstration of their project. The official judging guide specifies either a slide presentation with a maximum of 7 slides or a video presentation with a maximum length of 30 seconds.
The official project submission page and linked project materials should use English. If a team uses another language in its project demo video, English subtitles are required.
Global Nominees are projects that advance from the local NASA Space Apps Challenge to the global judging stage. Haldwani has previously produced Global Nominee teams, making the local event part of the wider NASA Space Apps innovation ecosystem.
No. NASA Space Apps is intentionally multidisciplinary. You do not need to work for NASA or be a space expert. The challenge welcomes participants with different backgrounds, skills, and perspectives.
NASA Space Apps is a global community event and participation is generally offered without a participation fee. For the Haldwani Local Event, participants should follow the registration information and instructions published by the local organizing team.
Yes, but participants under 18 are subject to additional requirements. Under the 2026 NASA Participant Terms and Conditions, participants under 18 must be registered by a parent or legal guardian and must be accompanied during the event by a parent or legal guardian.
